Drug Costs Going to the Dogs?
You'll get cheaper prices for same drugs at a vet pharmacy
Not only do Americans pay more for the same drugs as people in other countries, we pay more for the same drugs that we can get at our vets!
How much more? According to CNN Interactive reports, for a month's supply of SmithKline Beecham's widely used Augmentin (active ingredients, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid) costs 163 percent more at drugstores for people than at a veterinary pharmacy.
The figures were in a study published Monday by Rep. Tom Allen (D-Maine), chief sponsor in the House of Representatives of the Prescription Drug Fairness for Seniors Act, which would end the disparity in prices that retail customers and most favored customers (the federal government, hospitals and large HMOs) pay.
As for the price of drugs for people, here and elsewhere, a USA Today survey shows that the world's best-selling drug, the heartburn medicine omeprazole (Prilosec or Losec), costs $3.30 a pill in the United States and $1.47 in Canada, while the allergy drug Claritin costs almost $2 a pill in the U.S. and 41 cents in Great Britain.
Why? The United States is the only industrialized country that does not have some form of price controls on prescription drugs.
In addition, the United States is the only country to allow prescription drugs to be advertised directly to consumers through television commercials and print ads -- a bill for $1.8 billion this year.
Unlike other countries the United States forbids wholesalers and retailers from buying drugs at lower prices from other countries.Visit our adopt a pet link pages to find the right pet for you!
